CLUB NEWS

Wednesday 9 February 2022

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the February 22' edition of the Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

The Beachside Course is finally open to everyone.  Members have been getting used to the new layout for over a month now and it is great to hear a lot of positive feedback about the course.  The course is still "growing in" in several fairway and light rough areas while the Tees, Greens and Surrounds have been great surfaces to play on.

The weather has been a bit drier so far this year and we are now in the final stages of completing the cart paths including the walking path through the course.

Work has also commenced on the new boundary fence along Riversdale Avenue and once complete, the new fence along the Golf Avenue will be erected.  Once again, the club has provided a new walking path through the course for residents to access the beach.  There will be gates at each entry to the walking path but they will always be open for access.

We hope everyone has been enjoying their golf at both Beachside and Hilltop recently.  Hilltop experienced one of the busiest holiday periods on record and now the normal weekly competition schedule is underway for the members at both courses.

January Golf Summary...

Hilltop was very busy last month trying to manage the peak holiday season plus all the visitors who would normally play at Beachside.  We hosted 8,818 rounds in January which is an average of 284 players per day.  Hilltop averaged 228 per day while Beachside averaged 56 members per day.  62% of the rounds at Hilltop were from members with 38% of the rounds from visitors.

With 2,832 competition rounds played at Hilltop there were 69 players that shot 40 points or better.

The top scores included 52 points by Hamish McLeod (yes in a single stableford and yes a 3 pointer on almost every hole) while Cliff Haynes shot 46 points and Lesley Betsis recorded 45 points to record the best score for the women golfers.  Ashton Brown shot 44 points while Brian Henning, Grant Oliver, Paul Lehmann and Harry Gourlay shot 43 points.  Special mention to Harry Gourlay who shot a one under par 71 off the stick and is just 13 YEARS OLD!

The Monthly Medal "Gold Medal" playoff was won on a count back by Gavin Lee over Jamie McLennan last week while Riley Bowman won the Cliffy Jacobs Trophy for the juniors.

Jye - Runner Up in NSW Amateur Championship

Jye Halls made it all the way through to the final of the NSW Amateur Championship after some gruelling come back battles in the match play rounds.

After coming back from well down in both the quarter final and semi final matches to win, Jye then came up against one of the best amateur golfers in the world, Harrison Crowe.  Harrison birdied 4 of the last 6 holes in the morning round to take the lead then Jye birdied 4 holes on the front 9 of the afternoon round but Harrison made 5 birdies to finish the final with a 6&4 victory.

We still have to remember Jye only turned 17 a couple of months ago.  Huge effort to finish Runner Up.

Course Maintenance

The course maintenance team are catching up on what has been a very trying time over the last few months.

It was very difficult to get much done at Hilltop during January with full fields starting from 6.00am everyday but the team worked hard on Monday to get the greens vertidrained and top dressed while the arborists and tree contractors were conducting tree maintenance around the course.

We have two new additional course maintenance staff, welcome to Andrew and Asgar who have recently joined Mark's team.

He's back!

Welcome back to Mario van Zyl (pictured ) who has re-joined the team at Hilltop as the Head Golf Professional after 14 months at Brookwater in Queensland.

Mario made the decision late last year to move back to Mollymook to provide a nicer environment for his family and so his daughter to start school with a lot of friends she grew up with (if you have lived at the back of Ipswich you will understand wanting to move back to Mollymook).

Our Teaching Professional, Brad is away on holidays this month while Mark recently successfully completed the final stage of the Australian PGA Legends Tour Qualifying School in Melbourne so he will be competing in Legends events later this year.

The club now has 5 PGA Professional staff members to assist you...

Barry - Golf Manager
Mario - Head Professional
Brad - Teaching Professional
Mark - Legends Tour Professional
Chris - Associate Professional

Hopefully the fine golfing weather continues this month.
