CLUB NEWS

Tuesday 1 March 2022

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the March 22' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

The first three weeks of February were great for golf however the last week hasn't been very enjoyable.  Please keep an eye on the weather forecast and conditions as we have seen what has happened in Brisbane and northern NSW recently and the serious rain is heading our way.

Given the recent weather we did pull off a few minor miracles lately by hosting the Adam & Alex Charity Golf Day last Friday, the second round of men's District Pennants on Sunday and the maintenance team completed the green renovations in between showers yesterday and this morning.

The new Beachside layout is proving popular amongst the members with 1,175 member social rounds played last month (187 more member social rounds than Hilltop).

Hopefully the weather will improve by next week and everyone can enjoy their golf again this month.

There will be NO CARTS tomorrow (Wednesday 2nd March) at either course and the decision will be made at 6.15am tomorrow whether the course is playable.  We will leave the booking sheet open tomorrow morning so everyone can cancel their bookings online without calling the golf shop.  If the forecast is correct, there probably won't be any carts on for the remainder of the week!

Kelsey in Top 100 in the world

Congratulations to Kelsey Bennett for breaking into the Top 100 amateur women golfers in the world rankings.  Kelsey is the 3rd highest Australian in the world rankings.

Kelsey was on Fox Sports over the weekend playing in the Athena Challenge in Melbourne.  Kelsey won two of the challenges against the pros and finished 3rd overall in the challenge section.  Unfortunately she got knocked out in the quarter-final of the 3 hole stroke competition when her opponent chipped in for eagle on the 3rd hole.

Kelsey has a busy schedule this month with the TPS at Bonnie Doon in Sydney this week, then the Hunter Valley TPS, the South Australian Classic in Adelaide followed by the Australian Amateur in Melbourne.

Men's Pennants

The men's pennant season is underway with two rounds completed.  Our Seniors team is leading the way in their Division while our Division 1 and 2 teams are coming 5th and 6th respectively (we won't mention how many teams are in each Division).

Men's pennant players are reminded to catch up at Hilltop at 4.00pm on Friday afternoons to finalise teams and travel arrangements.

The men's Pennant Leaderboard is attached below...

Women's Pennants

The women's pennant season gets underway this week (if the courses are above water) and we wish all the players the best of luck for the 2022 season.

The women's Pennant Draw is attached below...

February Golf Summary...

As mentioned above, the recent rain slowed down the golf rounds at the end of the month however we still hosted 7,298 golf rounds for the month.

There were 4,489 rounds at Hilltop at an average of 166 rounds per day and 2,809 rounds at Beachside at an average of 104 rounds per day (27 days with green renovations at each course).  71% of the rounds at Hilltop were from members and 52% of the rounds at Beachside were from members.

With 2,118 competition rounds played at Hilltop there were 27 players that shot 40 points (or 68 nett) or better.

The top scores included 45 points by Helen Reeson and 44 points by Neil Curran who top scored for the women and men respectively.  Other impressive scores include 43 points by Keith Claxton and 42 points from Therese Lahiff, Bill Pittaway, Geoff Thornhill and David Blunden.  In the Veterans Medal event, Michael Nestler and Stephen Wilson shot nett 65s while Neil Morgan shot 66 nett and Ray Seymour shot 68 nett.  Micah Watene shot 68 nett in the club Monthly Medal.

Congratulations to David Blunden who had a "Hole-In-One" on the 12th Hole on the 10th of February.

A reminder the Mixed Foursomes Championship is on Sunday 27th March with tee times (in groups of 6) between 7.00am - 8.00am for Mixed Foursomes players only as it is a 36 hole event on the one day.  We haven't had much luck with this event due to covid and wet weather issues in recent years so we are due for a change of fortune.  Single Stableford comp play will be available between 8.00am - 11.00am.

Adam & Alex Charity Day

Over $8,000.00 was raised last Friday for the Charlie Teo Foundation and the GI Cancer Institute.  This was a great effort from a field of 82 players.

This event is held each year in memory of Adam Lane and Alex Paduano who both lost their long battles with cancer.

The next event will be held  on Friday 24th February 2023 with welcome gift bags, bacon & egg rolls, drink tickets, burger & chips after golf, an MG car from AMH Motors for a Hole-In-One, great auction prizes and a live band in the clubhouse after golf.  Keep an eye out for this event next year as it is one of the best golf days on the annual calendar.

Course Maintenance

It wasn't the best timing for green renovations (due to the weather) but Mark and his team put in a huge effort to get the renovations completed over the last 48 hours.  With over 140mm (5.5 inches) of rainfall in the last 7 days the team had to "adapt" to the conditions so the scheduled plan of hollow-tyne coring had to be replaced with solid-tyne, verti-draining which basically means instead of large empty holes everywhere, there is now much smaller holes with a smoother surface.

The team started early on Sunday afternoon to get a head start as the forecast wasn't pretty but they managed to get every green vert-drained and top dressed before the heavier rainfall today.

The tree maintenance work also finished early as it became too dangerous in the wet weather today however several dead trees were removed from around the course yesterday.

Mark is off to Cape Wickham (only for one month)

Our Course Superintendent, Mark Pullinger has been offered a unique opportunity to work as the superintendent at Cape Wickham Golf Links (pictured) on King Island which is located in the Bass Straight (80 kilometres off the north west coast of Tasmania).

Cape Wickham is the #2 course in Australia (behind Royal Melbourne) and has been rated as high as #24 in the world!

Mark leaves this Friday and he will be away for one month.  We wish him well on his experience and he will probably be hitting a fairly low ball flight when he returns.

Mark also said any Mollymook members can play for free at Cape Wickham while he is there (just kidding).
