CLUB NEWS

Saturday 2 April 2022

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the April 22' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

Rain, rain and more rain resulted in a record 728.8mm of rainfall last month, keep in mind the March average total rainfall is just 138mm.  This resulted in just 21 days of golf and only 13 days with carts allowed on for the month.

We are all hoping for much better weather this month but unfortunately it's not off to a very good start, the courses will reopen for play tomorrow (Sunday 3rd April).  Carts won't be allowed on course for some time yet, especially with more rain forecast next week.

A reminder that Easter is just around the corner and we are expecting another very busy holiday period.  Please check your current bookings as we will be strictly enforcing late cancellation ($18 comp fee)  penalties for anyone that either cancels after 6.00am on the day of play or is a "no show".    We are currently reviewing our 21 day booking policy as many clubs have moved their booking window to between 3 and 8 days in advance for members to reduce or eliminate late cancelations and "no shows".

March Golf Summary...

Despite the heavy rainfall, we still had 5,325 rounds played in total for the 21 days of golf including 3,380 rounds at Hilltop and 1,945 rounds at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 73% of the play was from members with 27% from visitors. At Beachside, 62% of the play was from members and 38% from visitors.

There was 1,470 competition rounds played at Hilltop with 25 players scoring 40 points (or 68 nett) or better.

The best scores included 44 points by Brian Henning and Kevin Kennedy.  Frank Peacock had +7 in a Par event while Hayden Ralph and Matt Ringland shot 42 points.

Congratulations to our new Mixed Foursomes Champions, Kurt Rixon and Sue Kelly who won the Championship from Andrew and Debbie Lees in tough, wet conditions on Sunday 27th March.  The only thing worse than playing 18 holes in the rain is playing 36 holes in the rain and the small field managed to survive (just).  Congratulations to Peter and Karen Bashford who won the 36 Hole Nett from Garry and Sue Hilder.

Also, congratulations to Robert Watson who had his first "Hole-In-One" on the 9th Hole on Saturday, 12th March.

Pennants

Both the men's and women's pennant seasons have been severely impacted by the wet weather.  The men's season is almost complete with the Final being played tomorrow.  Congratulations to the men's Senior team who defeated Eden 3/2 in their Semi-Final match at Catalina GC last Sunday.  They now meet Tura GC in the final at Moruya tomorrow morning and we wish them the best of luck.

The men's Division 1 and 2 teams finished 4th respectively in their divisions.  Please see the final table on the link below.

It's been a slow start to the women's season with Division 1's first three matches postponed.  Our two teams in the Open Division both had wins at Catalina yesterday and we wish all the women's teams the best of luck for the remainder of their season.

Junior Golf Academy

We currently have 2 members (Kelsey Bennett and Jye Halls) who were recently selected in the 2022 Golf Australia High Performance Squad and have been through our Mollymook Junior Program.

Mollymook has the second largest Junior Membership on the south coast and we are hoping to develop some more future stars soon.

Unfortunately, both Covid and the wet weather have played havoc with the Junior Clinics this year but we hope to return to our normal weekly schedule after the Easter holidays.

Course Maintenance

Basically repeatedly cleaning up after this (see photos below) is what the maintenance staff have been up to lately.  The bunkers have been repaired several times and its been challenging to get on top of the mowing as there has been limited opportunities to get the mowers on course.

3rd in Australian Amateur Championship

Congratulations to Kelsey Bennett who finished 3rd in the Australian Amateur in Melbourne yesterday.  Kelsey finished on a total of 2 under par for the 72 hole Championship.

After the event, Kelsey received an official invitation from Golf Australia to represent Australia at the 2022 Queen Sirikit Cup at Laguna National Golf Resort in Singapore in May.

Kelsey is in the running to win one of the two Karrie Webb (pictured left)  scholarships available this year.

Well done to Jye Halls who was also exempt into the Australian Amateur Championship but unfortunately just missed the cut in the men's event.

Good golfing this month or more to the point, hopefully "lots of golfing" this month.
