CLUB NEWS

Tuesday 5 July 2022

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the July 22' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

We finally had some sort of normality last month with only one day of "no carts" and just 45mm of rain in total for June.  We had 6,908 rounds of golf played with 4,374 rounds at Hilltop and 2,534 rounds at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 86% of the rounds were from members with 14% from visitors.  At Beachside, 72% of play was from members with 28% from visitors.

But unfortunately, here we go again...

Rain, Rain and more Rain

The east coast has taken another battering from the weather.  Since the rain started on Friday 1st July we have now had 298mm (almost 12 inches) in the last 4 days and 1,652mm (almost 65 inches) this year.  It has finally eased today so hopefully things will improve soon.

It is obviously very wet here but there are many courses a lot worse off than us.  Some courses in the Illawarra and north-western Sydney regions have only reopened a few weeks ago since February and will now be closed for possibly months again.  You can currently use a Jet Ski across the whole Port Kembla golf course.

A reminder that you can access the live weather station at Hilltop by clicking on the link below.

Courses Closed again tomorrow (Wednesday 6th July)

The golf courses have been closed for 4 days now but we will provide a daily update to everyone booked on the tee sheet as to when we will reopen.

We have just done another full course inspection and we will remain closed again tomorrow.  We now need some serious winds to help dry out the courses.

June Golf Summary...

There was 2,640 competition rounds played at Hilltop with 15 players scoring 40 points (or 68 nett) or better which continues to show the course is playing difficult even with preferred lies.  Some outstanding scores for the month include, Graham Hillyer with 44 points while Darryl Bozicevic, Tim Innes and Jackie Harvey (yes Golf Shop Jackie) shot 42 points each.  Mike (psycho) Bulbert, and Richard (syrup) Maple-Brown both shot 41 points.  Congratulations to Pip Ellis who shot 68 nett in the women's Medal round.

GMA/ASTMA Conference

Our Golf Manager- Barry West, Head Professional - Mario van Zyl and Course Superintendent - Mark Pullinger attended the Golf Management Australia (GMA) and Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA) conference in Melbourne late last month.  It was Australia's largest ever golf industry conference with over 1,000 delegates from around Australia.

It was a great opportunity for our golf management team to catch up with so many managers and superintendents all in the one place while listening to expert presenters from all over the world.  The main theme was how the Covid pandemic has brought 2030 to 2020 and how to secure your club's future in a world that has changed so rapidly.

Barry went through a lesson on body language on stage in front of 1,000 people which apparently he didn't really enjoy!

During the conference, the event MC, Andrew Daddo recorded a podcast with Barry and Mario which provided a bit of entertainment.  If you have ever had any issues with your short game, then you need to listen to this podcast...

Kelsey on the world stage

Kelsey has been all over the golf news lately after making the Top 8 in the Women's Amateur Championship in Norfolk, England.  Kelsey made a massive comeback from 4 down in the quarter final match to eventually get beaten on the 20th Hole.

Kelsey then flew to the United States to play in the Heritage Classic in Wichita, Kansas against the professionals on the Women's All Pro Tour.  Kelsey finished with a total of 8 under par 280 (72, 73, 69, 66) to finish Runner-Up and heads to Georgia today to try and pre-qualify for the US Women's Amateur Championship

After Georgia, Kelsey's next event starts on the 10th July in the North & South Amateur Championship at the infamous Pinehurst #2 course in North Carolina.

On the back of her recent good form, Kelsey was selected last week to represent Australia in the 2022 World Amateur Teams Championship in France later this year.

Jye heads off to the States later this week

Jye Halls is competing in the NSW State Age Junior Golf Championships this week in Byron Bay and then he heads off to America to start his golfing campaign.

Jye's first event will be the Callaway World Championship on the 17th July.  We wish him all the best on his first visit to the United States.

It's great for the club to be sponsoring these two young golfers on the world stage and we will provide updates on their progress in America.  We wish them all the best in their golfing adventures and I'm sure they will do us proud wearing their Mollymook logoed shirts.

Good golfing to everyone this month!
