CLUB NEWS

Monday 1 August 2022

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the August 22' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

August has to be better than July for golf, it couldn't get much worse!  It started raining at the start of July and very rarely stopped with the course closed for 7 days and carts were allowed "on-course" for just 4 days only.  We ended up with over 400mm of rain in July when the monthly average is 126mm.

Just a reminder to take extra care in the wet and muddy conditions as a couple of members have recently had to be taken to hospital after slipping over on the steep slopes.  Golf shoes with "soft spikes" also help during the wet conditions instead of rubber sole shoes.

It has been very disappointing to hear a few members complaining to golf staff because they cannot use a golf cart.  If you have been playing in the wet conditions, you will have seen all the damage from pull buggies and electric trolleys in the last couple of weeks so there has been no chance of getting carts on.  The club would much rather have the carts on the course instead of sitting in the shed as it has a huge impact on revenue but common sense must prevail in these difficult times.

We are hoping for another dry, windy day tomorrow and the carts will be back on course this Wednesday (3rd August).

July Golf Summary...

There were 3,858 rounds in total played last month (there were 6,686 in July 2021).  There were 2,218 rounds played at Hilltop and 1,640 rounds at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 84% of the  rounds were from members and 16% from visitors.  At Beachside,  72% of the rounds were from members and 28% from visitors.

To give you a better indication of the effect of the weather, the golf revenue finished over $90,000 down in revenue compared to July last year.

There was 1,147 competition rounds played at Hilltop with just 9 players scoring 40 points or better which is a record low.  The best scores for the month include Ian Smith with 42 points and Suzy Thomson with +6 in a Par event.  Ivan Majdandzic and Max Mulvey shot 41 points while Gerard Taniane, Jason Apps, Greg Holmes, George Betsis and Mike (psycho) Bulbert all shot 40 points.

Special mentions to our Past President, Dave Hassall who had a Hole-In-One on the 17th Hole on Wednesday 20th July and to Mike Duffey who had a Hole-In-One on the 5th Hole Thursday 28th July.  Well done gents!

Jye has been on fire in the U.S.

Jye Halls has done Mollymook Golf Club very proud while travelling around the United States.  Jye represented Australia for the first time in the IMG Academy Junior World Championships at Torrey Pines in California.  Jye finished Runner Up in the individual event with a great score of 6 under par (75,70,69,68) around one of the toughest layouts in the world, Torrey Pines South Course.  In the teams event, Jye and his team mate Kai Komulainen (pictured together), WON the team event for Australia by a massive 14 shots.  Not a bad effort for Jye's first overseas experience and representing Australia for the first time.

Jye then travelled to the Westin Mission course in Rancho Mirage to play in the FCG Callaway World Championship where he shot 10 under par total for the 3 days to finish 8th.  Once again, a super effort against the best junior golfers in the world.  The winning score was 19 under for 3 rounds!

Jye played in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort last week and while he didn't have his best result, he shot rounds of 72 & 76 and unfortunately missed the Match Play section cut by just 4 shots.  He still beat 60% of the field last week which was a great effort.  Jye will be back in Mollymook this weekend!

Kelsey won US Amateur Qualifying event

Kelsey won her sectional qualifying event in Georgia and now has a week of practice leading up to the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Chambers Bay in Washington.  Kelsey is pictured with her US Amateur Invitation.

Kelsey finished 11th last week in the Ladies National Golf Association Amateur Championship at Lake Forest Country Club in St.Louis, Missouri.

We wish Kelsey all the best in U.S. Women's Amateur Championship next week and hopefully, she can do even better than her 5th place finish in the British Women's Amateur Championship in June.

Kelsey will then head to France later this month to represent Australia in the 2022 World Amateur Teams Championship.

Barry recognised for 30 years membership of the Australian PGA

Acknowledgment last week for our Golf Manager, Barry West for 30 years membership of the PGA of Australia at the annual NSW PGA State Meeting.

The CEO of the Australian PGA, Gavin Kirkman (pictured with Barry) also started in the golf industry in the late 80s and represented the Gold Coast Tourism Bureau with Barry at various events around Australia and New Zealand.

Barry has been around the world from coaching Steven Bowditch on the PGA Tour to being the General Manager at some amazing properties in Australia, China and South Korea.  He has had some great experiences including being on the Golf Advisory Committee for Golf NSW and being the guest speaker at Golf Management Australia events in Sydney and Brisbane.

Barry will have his 10th work anniversary at Mollymook Golf Club this October and is looking forward to his next 30 years as a PGA member.

On a side note, we should also congratulate Barry and his long time partner, Mel for getting married last Saturday.  It was very much a "surprise wedding"!!!
