CLUB NEWS

Tuesday 1 November 2022

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the November 22' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

We just had our 13th weekend this year without rain!  An unusual milestone but 13 dry ones out of 43 weeks so far sums up this year (lucky January was dry).  We just had our wettest October on record with 411.4mm last month which now totals 2.456 metres of rain since 1st January.  We were closed for 6 days last month with another 7 days of "no carts" due to the rain.

The weather played havoc with some of our major events last month with cancellations and postponements but we did manage to squeeze in the PGA Legends, NSW Senior Masters Championship which was a great event for the club.  Our Women's Club Championships are at the halfway stage with the last two rounds postponed to the 14th & 15th of November and the Men's Club Championships finished last weekend as a 3 round event after the second round was cancelled due to the weather.

It's also that time of year again with the Women's, Vets and the Club's AGMs being held this month.

October Golf Summary...

We had 6,148 rounds of golf played in October which was 12% below budget.  Considering we were closed 6 days and another 7 without carts, it wasn't a bad result.  There were 3,534 rounds played at Hilltop and 2,614 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 76% of the rounds were from members with 24% from visitors.  At Beachside, 62% of rounds were from members with 38% from visitors.

There were 1,683 competition rounds played at Hilltop with 21 players scoring 40 points (or 68 nett or +4) or better last month

Some outstanding scores for the month include a husband and wife team with Ruth Robson scoring 65 nett which included an eagle 2 on the 10th hole while her husband Scott, shot 67 nett.  Chad Lavington also shot 67 nett in the men's medal.  Kim Johnson was the best of the stableford events with 45 points while Daniel Illingworth shot 43 points.  Peter Paterson, Matthew Shrub, Brendan Bull and Dawn Makeham all shot 42 points.

There were 74 pros that competed in the PGA Legends event and they shot 5 eagles during the 2 day event.

One special mention must go to Kelsey Bennett while playing in the comp on Tuesday 11th October, as she holed a 3 wood for her second shot on the 18th hole for an Albatross 2!  We've been asking around and nobody can verify if there has been another albatross in the history of golf at Hilltop so please let us know if you know via email if you know of one at hilltop@mollymookgolf.com.au

Good luck to the women who are competing in their Club Championships at the moment with rounds 3 & 4 in a couple of weeks.  Well done to all the men who finished their championships last weekend (see below)...

Men's Club Championships

Congratulations to Jye Halls who won his fourth Mollymook Club Championship on Sunday by a mere 16 shots from Kurt Lampe.  Jye shot rounds of 70, 75 & 73 for a total 218 (2 over par) in the weather shortened event.  Jye also won the Junior Championship (yes he is still only 17) for his fourth time as well.

In B Grade, it was a very close tussle with Ben Elson shooting 85 in the final round to win by just 1 shot from Tim Innes.  Ben finished with a total of 257.

In C Grade, Eric Brown just got home by beating the odds on favourite and 36 hole leader, Brett Lowry by just 1 shot.  Eric finished with a total of 277.  Apparently Brett is still out practising on the 6th hole where he made an easy 11.

Well done to Ed De Marco who won the President's Trophy for the best overall nett score with rounds of 72, 73 & 68 (total 213) to win by just 1 shot from David Kneeshaw.

Congratulations to all the winners in the gross and nett divisions and also to the Top 8 in the gross who qualify for the Matchplay Championship and also to the Top 8 in the Overall Nett who qualify for the Captain's Trophy (handicap matchplay event).   Click the link below to see all the results of the men's championships...

Chris Taylor wins NSW Senior Masters by 1 shot!

Our Golf Manager Barry, and Chris (pictured left) turned professional together back in 1989 and played a lot of golf together over the years.  Barry gave Chris a bit of "local knowledge" in a practice round (mainly showing him where not to go) and Chris shot a respectable 73 in the first round in difficult conditions to be 5 shots behind fellow Queenslander, Nigel Lane.  Several pros commented on Nigel's score being as good as 10 under in those conditions.

Andre Stolz shot 68 in round 2 to shoot up the leaderboard while overnight leader Nigel slipped back with a 3 over 75.  Peter Lonard was well placed but also slipped back with a 75 to finish 5th.  Chris shot a great 69 in round 2 to finish on 2 under 142 to win by just one shot from Andre and Nigel.

An interesting fact is Barry, Chris, Nigel and Andre all did their PGA Traineeship at the same time from 1989-1991.

The NSW Masters Championship was a huge success thanks to all the members who helped during the event.  Many players commented on how welcome they felt by the reception from all the members and volunteers.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers, and also the major sponsors for supporting the event (listed below) and in particular, Carl Roklitzer and John Nevin from BSP Advisory who are the founding sponsors of the event.

Kelsey's European Tour Fundraiser

The club is hosting a fundraising event, combined with our annual "Patron's Day" on Friday 2nd December (8.30am Shotgun Start) to assist Kelsey with her costs in Europe.

Kelsey has decided to turn professional and she heads to Spain on Sunday 4th December to play in the Ladies European Tour School.  Kelsey will play over two weeks in the pre-qualifying stage and then the final stage where the Top 20 finishers will earn their card to play on the Ladies European Tour (LET) in 2023.  It's an exciting time and also an expensive exercise to turn professional in Europe but it presents  great opportunity for Kelsey and a potential pathway to the LPGA Tour in America the following year.

It will be $50 to play in the event (including a burger for lunch) with some auction items available to buy and also a "Beat The Pro" hole where Kelsey will hit a shot against each group on the 12th Hole.

All proceeds will go to Kelsey to help cover her costs to get onto the European Tour.  If you have anything you would like to donate towards the auction, please contact Barry at Hilltop.

Also, keep an eye on Foxtel this week for Kelsey when she play's in the Women's Asia Pacific Amateur Championship in Thailand from the 3rd - 6th November.  Hopefully she can go one better than her runner-up finish last year!

Course Maintenance

It's been another tough month to be on the maintenance team but Mark and his team did a great job preparing the course for the Legends Tour event.  The course was in great condition considering the 160mm of rain in the week before the tournament.  The greens have now got their speed back and they continue to mow where they can as the course is very close to getting back to normal despite another 41.4mm last night.
