CLUB NEWS

Thursday 5 January 2023

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Happy New Year!

Welcome to the January 23' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

We hope you enjoyed the Christmas/New Year holiday period with your family and friends.  It has certainly been a busy time for our staff and we would like to thank all the Hilltop and Beachside staff who have hard at work during the peak holiday season.

The club set a new daily golf rounds record on the 29th of December with 621 rounds of golf played on the one day including 321 at Hilltop and 300 at Beachside.  Since the 27th December, we have hosted over 500 rounds of golf on most days and the Beachside clubhouse has catered for over 1,300 meals a day on a daily basis.

It is shaping up to be a great year with hopefully some better golfing weather over the next 12 months!

December Golf Summary...

We had an amazing 9,329 rounds of golf played in December which is a new December record.  This was up 1,329 (16.6%) on budget and up 2,676 (40.2%) on December 2021.  There were 5,444 rounds played at Hilltop and 3,885 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 68% of the rounds were from members with 32% from visitors.  At Beachside, 49% of rounds were from members with 51% from visitors.

There were 2,614 competition rounds played at Hilltop with 54 players scoring 40 points (68 nett) or better last month which was the highest for the whole year.

Some outstanding scores for the month include Murray McDonald who shot 50 points (yes 50) in an individual stableford.  Murray's handicap is now 7 shots less!  Scott Robson must have finally holed a putt (or 10) with 45 points and Ian Whyte shot great 44 points.  Andrew McEnnally, Steve Wilson, Victor Bayliss, Greg Stone, Phil Jeffery and Bob Bowen all shot 43 points.  Special mention to Bobby Bowen's 43 points playing off a handicap of 4 which was 69 off the stick.  The rumour is he has peaked to early for a special event next month.

Congratulations to Mic Mac, Yvonne Modra, Jim Bryant, Hayden Ralph, Mark Willard, Alexander Robertson and Sue O'Brien who all shot 42 points last month.  We probably should also make special mention of Jye Halls effort on New Years Eve with 40 points off +2 (yes that is 6 under par)!

South Coast Open

Congratulations to Daniel Gale (pictured) who won the $50,000 South Coast Open at Hilltop last month.  Daniel set a new course record in the process with rounds of 66 & 67 for a total of 133 (11 under par).  Daniel won by 5 shots from seasoned professional, Matthew Millar who shot rounds of 71 & 67.  Kyle Michel and Alexander Simpson tied for 3rd with a 36 hole total of 4 under par.

Daniel won $8,987.50 for first place which will help him in his efforts to play in the main Australian Tour events.  Daniel also shot 4 under in the Pro-Am event in howling winds so he actually shot 15 under total for 3 days.

Our own Club Champion, Jye Halls did us all proud by finishing 8th and was the lowest amateur in the field with rounds of 73 & 70.  The next best amateur finished 24th.

Another interesting fact was the field averaged 8 eagles a day in the Open which shows how good these young pros and elite amateurs are.

A big thank you to all the members who volunteered their time during the event as these big events can't run successfully without volunteer support.  The players really appreciate the spotters assisting them find their balls.

Golf Rules 2023 Update

On the 1st January 2023, a series of changes to the Rules of Golf took effect worldwide.

In addition to a small number of amendments to the Rules that apply to all golfers, the changes include ground breaking modifications for people with disability, and a global modernisation of the way in which the rules are made available.

The Rules of Golf have traditionally been reviewed every four years by golf's joint international governing bodies, the R&A and the United States Golf Association. It is the first time that specific regulations for golfers with disability have been included in the Rules of Golf.

Please also note that Golf Australia have advised that the latest, revised Rules of Golf will only be available via Apps and Websites (no more books).

Please click the link below to get a better understanding of the rules changes...

Kelsey Bennett Update...

Just letting everyone know that Kelsey has now turned professional and while unfortunately, she did not get her full Tour Card on the Ladies European Tour (LET), she has qualified for the LET secondary Tour (Access Series) and she will also get some starts on the main LET this year.

Kelsey will also be playing on the Women's WPGA Tour of Australasia from January through to the end of March before heading over to Europe.  We wish her well in her first year playing "on tour" against the professionals.

Kelsey has also written a "Thank You" letter to all the members that supported her fundraising day in December.  Please see attached...

Barry gains his Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation

After the last 4 years of study and exams, our Golf Manager, Barry West recently passed his final exam and is now one of six managers in Australia to hold the Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation.  Barry is the only one in Australia to also be a Certified PGA Professional.

The 4 year, Business Management Institute (BMI) Program is run by the Club Manager's Association of America (CMAA) through Golf Management Australia.

Barry described his final exam as 7 hours and 57 minutes of absolute torture after completing the 400 questions.

There are currently 119 people around Australia in the BMI program and Barry was in the first group in Australia to have successfully passed all the core units to qualify to sit the final CCM exam.

We hope you have a great 2023 and on behalf of all the management and staff, we hope you enjoy your golfing adventures this year!
