CLUB NEWS

Thursday 2 February 2023

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the February 23' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

What a summer it has been so far with record golf numbers in both December and January.  The Beachside Clubhouse has also been very busy with the Kiosk, Cafe, Bistro and the Balter Bar operating at full capacity on most days throughout January.  The Balter Bar has now closed as we have reached the end of the "peak" holiday period and we received a lot of positive feedback from members and visitors about their experience.

The normal competition schedule has started back with the Vets having their first game yesterday and the Ladies are looking forward to their "Opening Day" Ambrose Event on Tuesday.

There has already been a couple of small changes to the annual competition schedule but we will continue to update the latest version on the club website.  We will notify you of any major event change.

Lets hope the fine golfing weather continues.

Men's Pennants

The Men's Pennant season gets underway on Sunday the 12th February at Catalina.  Pictured is the last team to win Division One back in 2019.

The format has changed this year with groups playing in 4s which frees up tee times for members to play normal comps on Pennant days so please keep an eye out for Sunday 26th February when it opens.

We have already had a lot of interest in playing this year so the teams for Round 1 are pretty much finalised however, if you would like to represent the club in pennants this year, we are hosting a Men's Pennant Meeting next Wednesday (8th February) at 4.00pm at Hilltop.

Please also see the draw on the link below to work out your availability for the season as we will be confirming everyone's availability at the Pennant Meeting.

January Golf Summary...

We had an amazing 10,467 rounds of golf played in January which is the highest amount of rounds ever played in one month in the history of the club.  This was up 1,467 (16.3%) on budget and up 1,649 (18.7%) on January 2022.

There were 6,202 rounds played at Hilltop and 4,265 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 68% of the rounds were from members with 32% from visitors (identical % to December).  At Beachside, 41% of rounds were from members with 59% from visitors.  The visitor % of play is always 15 to 30% higher than average in December and January.

There were 3,036 competition rounds played at Hilltop with 74 players scoring 40 points or better last month which is also a new record however out of 3,036 rounds it is only 2.4%.

Some outstanding scores for the month include Scott Willard with 49 points in an individual stableford.  We also had a visitor shoot 48 points.  Some other great achievements include Harry Hattersley and Jonathan Morris with 46 points.  While some great rounds include Andrew Lees and Craig Lee who both play off a handicap of 6 (or used too) as they both had 45 points each or 3 under par 69s.   Some of the best women's scores include Gloria Chapman with 43 points while Debbie Lees, Suzy Thomson, Elaine Leach and Rhonda Waller all shot 42 points.

Congratulations to the January "Eagle Brigade"...  Zoran Ninovic on the 13th, Harrison Brookes on the 18th, Frank Lampe on the 18th and Aaron Sharp on the 10th hole.

Two special mentions for Mark Masterson and Peter Cooke who both had Hole-In-Ones last month.  Mark's was on Saturday 21st on the 12th Hole and Peter's was last Thursday on the 17th Hole.  Both scored under 30 points so maybe it's a bad omen for your scorecard!

Course Maintenance

The maintenance team have been working their way through the bunkers at Hilltop replenishing them with sand.  Two-thirds of the bunkers are now complete with the remainder to be finished next week.  It takes over 110 tonnes of sand to replenish the bunkers!

Green renovations will commence later this month at Beachside on Monday 20th and at Hilltop on the 27th & 28th February.  During this time we will also install some new cart paths linking the 4th & 5th holes at Beachside and a new path on 13 & 14 at Hilltop.

Tree maintenance will also be conducted during this time so it is a very busy period coming up for the maintenance team.

Raking Bunkers

With the "refreshing" of the bunkers, this might be a timely reminder...

Before leaving a bunker, a player should carefully fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints made during play.

  • Always enter the bunker at the lowest point.
  • Pull rake toward you as you exit the bunker.
  • If required, rake other affected areas.
  • Do not pile sand at the edge of the bunker.
  • Push back excess sand.

Always leave the rake in the flat of the bunker with the handle parallel to the line of flight of the hole being played.  Rakes should be placed as far from the edge as possible.

Volunteers

While the Hilltop Course is closed on the 27th & 28th we have some members who have offered to help out with gardens around the course.

All volunteers will need to have gone through the induction process (most already have) and also sign the Volunteer Induction Agreement before commencing work.

If you would like to volunteer, please meet at the Hilltop Deck at 8.00am on Monday 27th February.

Kelsey Update...

Kelsey started with a bang, winning the WPGA Tour of Australasia Qualifying School in Melbourne putting all the seasoned pros on notice.

In the first event after the Q-School, Kelsey played brilliant in the Melbourne International to finish in a tie for 1st place with Queensland's Cassie Porter.  The pair then had a play off, where Cassie won on the 4th extra hole.

Kelsey won $4,500 in her first event and now she is competing in the bigger events and hopefully you will see her on TV this weekend at the TPS Murray River at Cobram Barooga.  She shot an even par 71 this morning.
