CLUB NEWS

Saturday 2 September 2023

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to Spring and the September 23' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

We finally has some rain last month with 30mm in total however only 5 days registered over 2mm.  We also had a few days of 24 and 25 degree temperatures which is very unusual for winter on the south coast.  The fine golfing weather looks set to continue again this month.

It was great to host one of our premier annual golf events last month, the Mollymook Open, which saw a very strong field of 179 competitors from 60 different clubs around NSW and the ACT.  More on the Open below...

August Golf Summary...

We had 7,344 rounds of golf played in August which was 844 (13%) up on budget and 1,002 (16%) up on August 2022.

There were 4,555 rounds played at Hilltop and 2,789 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 86% of the rounds were from members with 14% from visitors.  At Beachside, 65% of rounds were from members with 35% from visitors.

There were 2,792 competition rounds played at Hilltop with 45 players scoring 40 points (68 nett or +4) or better last month which is 1.6% of the total comp rounds.

Some great scores last month including Michael Keely and Declan Mulvaney who "top scored" with 44 points.  Chester Kent shot 43 points while Noeleen McAlister, Darcy Wooden and Garry Hilder all shot 42 points.  Special mention to Garry's effort which was a 2 under par round.  In stroke rounds, Keith Date shot 66 nett while Geoff Beach had 67.  Jye Halls also deserves a mention, whilst not on top of the leader boards, he did shoot 5 under par 67 TWICE last month.

There were only a few eagles in August...

Eagle Brigade... 1st Hole - Darcy Wooden, 13th Hole - Aaron Basile and Brad Wall (yes, our Teaching Pro!)

Hole In One... Congratulations to Brett Lowry on his first ever Hole-In-One on the 5th Hole on Thursday 24th August and to Eric Brown on his second Hole-In-One on the 5th Hole on Saturday 26th August.  Same hole, 48 hours apart is quite rare!

Mollymook Open

Congratulations to local member, Jye Halls, who won his second Mollymook Open Championship by a massive 6 shots.

Jye opened up a huge lead after shooting a first round, 5 under par 67, to lead by 4 from Matthew Frith from Cronulla.  Jye's second round of 74 gave him a 3 under total of 141.  Nick Matwijow from Nelson Bay finished second on 147.

Congratulations also goes to local member, Brian Russell, on winning the Overall Nett on a count back with 145.  Another local, Declan Mulvaney was the Division 3 winner on Day 1 with 37 points.  The Doc is obviously in hot form!

Hilltop Course Masterplan

Thank you to all the members who came to the information sessions and were able to speak directly to the course architect about the proposed masterplan and Hilltop renovation schedule.

We received a lot of positive feedback from the members and the Golf Management Committee are reviewing all the comments and suggestions from the members who attended the sessions.

For more information about the proposed masterplan, please click on the link below where you can access proposed plans and reports from various course architects (dating back to 2006), Hole by Hole presentations,  9th Hole Safety Review and the overall map of the latest masterplan.

President's Update

I would like to commence this update by thanking you, our members for the patience and understanding you have shown during the renovations to the Beachside Clubhouse. The renovations are progressing well and at the time of writing this update they are on schedule and due for completion in November.

There is another group of people who also deserve thanks and praise for the way in which they are coping with the renovations, which at times are noisy and disruptive. I am referring to our loyal and professional staff. At times the working conditions have been very challenging and the patience you have shown and your dedication to looking after our members and guests has been outstanding.

SLOW PLAY!

As mentioned in previous eNews, we have been tracking the times of when groups finish their rounds through the MiClub system.

Unfortunately, there are repercussions from slow play which can cause major issues later in the day.  It impacts the golfing experience for both members and visitors.  On busier days, it means the difference between visitors finishing their round in daylight or asking for a refund in the golf shop because they did not complete their round.

During normal conditions, the acceptable pace of play is 4 hours and 20 minutes.  We know with preferred lies, this slows to around 4 hours 35 minutes but there has been many competition rounds recently taking over 5 hours which is not acceptable.

From Monday 4th September , should your group fall more than one hole behind, your group will receive a warning for slow play.  Should your position in the field not improve after the warning, each player will receive a two shot penalty.  This will be implemented by golf staff monitoring play during or at the end of your round should your group finish 15 minutes or more behind the group in front of you (based on rounds taking over 4 hours).

We appreciate your understanding on this matter as we are trying to improve the golfing experience for everyone and slow play has been the number one complaint from members over the last couple of months.

Volunteers

We are pleased to announce that Sue Rayner has now officially taken over as the Volunteer Co-ordinator.  We would like to thank David Hassall, who has moved to Kiama, for all his efforts and also to Grant Knight for all his help with co-ordinating members.

We have set up a new email address for volunteers at... volunteers@mollymookgolf.com.au for all our volunteers to use.  We need volunteers to assist with both major events (starters, spotters, etc) and also for course improvements (tee gardens, pick up sticks, etc).  The course improvement work normally takes place when Hilltop is closed (see September dates above).

Sue will be contacting all our current volunteer crew next week to confirm what jobs they would prefer to do.  Please email us at volunteers@mollymookgolf.com.au if you would like more information.
