CLUB NEWS

Monday 4 December 2023

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the December 23' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

A big thank you to all the members who volunteered for various jobs during the WPGA NSW Open Regional Qualifying event late last month.  Also congratulations to our Superintendent, Mark Pullinger, and his team for presenting the course in magnificent condition.  The course looked great on tv and we received a lot of positive feedback from the players.

We are now in the "calm before the storm" golfing period where it quietens down a little leading up to Christmas/New Year holidays when the courses run at 100% capacity for a couple of weeks.  A reminder to please check your golf bookings and cancel online as soon as possible if you are not intending to play.  From the 27th of December, we knock back around 50 to 100 bookings every day until mid January as the demand far outweighs the supply of tee times available.

Speaking of storms, the summer storms arrived a little early with some incredible storms and rainfall last week causing the course to be closed for the first time in a very long time.  We had 315.4mm of rain last month with 234mm falling on the 28th & 29th November.  Safe to say, our lack of water issue is no longer an issue.

November Golf Summary...

We had 7,623 rounds of golf played in November which was 377 rounds (4.7%) down on budget and 27 (0.4%) up on November 2022.  Unfortunately, a very wet end to the month (with no carts) kept the rounds down slightly.

There were 4,642 rounds played at Hilltop and 2,981 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 75% of the rounds were from members with 25% from visitors.  At Beachside, 59% of rounds were from members with 41% from visitors.

There were 2,338 competition rounds played at Hilltop with 34 players scoring 40 points (68 nett or +4) or better last month.

Some fantastic scores last month including 16 year old Wade Carson, who shot 52 points.  It was Wade's first competition game after months of practice at our Beachside course which obviously paid off.  Wade also lost 20 shots in one go from his handicap which may be a record,  Apparently Wade has gone from being the 4th best golfer in the family straight to #1!

Congratulations to Michael Charles who shot an amazing 47 points.  Michael's handicap also lost a "few shots".  42 points was a popular score last month with Terry Parkes, Paul Manning, Keith Date, Bob Johnston, Stephen Wykes and Debbie Lees all scoring 42 points.

Eagle Brigade...   13th Hole - Richard Shearman

Hole In Ones...  Peter Jackson made an ace on the 17th Hole on the 5th November and Chris McLean ("Golf Shop Chris") scored his first Hole In One on the 12th Hole on the 15th November.

Please note the member's scores from the WPGA Pro-Am event did not count for eagles or acknowledgements above due to the scramble format with the tee shots.

Congratulations to Mark Hale from Mudgee GC who won the 2023 Mollymook Senior Open with a one over par 73.  Mark won by 2 shots from Buddy Nagi from Kogarah GC.  Our members featured in the Nett results with Frank Lampe winning the nett with 70 by one shot from Eddy De Marco.

Men's Foursomes Championship

Congratulations to Tim Powell and Brian Russell (pictured) on winning their first Men's Foursomes Championship together.  It was the largest field in over a decade with 62 players and 60 of the field would like to thank the defending champions, Jye and Blake Halls, for not partnering together this year which made it a very open race.

Tony Walker & Aaron Sharp held a slender one shot lead with a score of 78 after round 1 from Brian & Tim and Frank Lampe & Kevin Roberts.  Leith Thomas & Gavin Lee shot the lowest second round score of 77 to finish on a total of 158.  Brian & Tim shot another 79 to finish tied on 158 which meant a sudden death play off was to follow.  Graham and Mark Beasley just missed the playoff by one shot on 159 while Brad Parker & Jye Halls finished 2 shots back on 160.

In the playoff, Brian Russell hit a great chip from left of the 9th green and Tim sunk the putt to earn their first Foursomes victory from Leith & Gavin.  Tony walker and Aaron Sharp are still trying to finish their second round!

WPGA NSW OPEN Qualifying

WOW, what a great event!  We had 40 female professionals and elite amateurs from 7 different countries play our Hilltop course a couple of weeks ago.

Local member and tournament favourite, Kelsey Bennett (pictured) won the first day's Pro-Am event sponsored by Karen Bashford from South Coast Business & Financial Solutions.

The event had a real tournament feel with 128 players on Day 1, then 80 players (2 pros per group) on Day 2 and then the 40 professionals and elite amateurs battled it out in the final round on Monday, live on Foxtel and Kayo.

Young 16 year old, Rachel Lee won the event in a 3 way play off from Rhianna Lewis and Chizuru Ueda after shooting 143.  The course was set with a mixture of men's and women's tee positions with a Par of 72.  Click the link below for more...
