MOLLYMOOK GOLF CLUB - FEBRUARY E-NEWS

Tuesday 6 February 2024

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the February 24' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

It was a very busy holiday period and we are now back in full swing with the regular golfing season.  Both the Mollymook Veterans and Women's sub-clubs have recommenced and we look forward to another great year of golf for everyone at Mollymook Golf Club.

Unfortunately, we are still having a few wet weather issues with another 32mm of rain just in the last 24 hours.  We have now had well over 700mm in the last 3 months.

Congratulations to the 20 players who represented Mollymook in the "2024 Crikey Cup" last weekend with a home victory 24-16 against the Cumberland team.  Formerly the Cummolly Challenge, the "Ryder Cup" style event was renamed in honour of the organiser, Craig Bury, who died tragically "on course" just over 3 years ago.

January Golf Summary

We had 11,835 rounds of golf played in January which was 1,835 rounds (18.4%) ahead of budget and 1,368 rounds (13.1%) up on January 2023.  Wednesday 3rd January was the busiest day with 581 rounds on one day (281 at Hilltop and 300 at Beachside).

There were 6,780 rounds played at Hilltop and 5,055 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 63.8% of the rounds were from members with 36.2% from visitors.  At Beachside, 44.1% of rounds were from members with 55.9% from visitors.

There were 2,647 competition rounds played at Hilltop with an impressive 64 players scoring 40 points or better last month.

Some very hot scores last month included Thomas Ellis with 48 points (yes in an individual event) and Paul Hill with 47 points.  Matthew Helman, Simon Makeham, Brody Lavington and Brian Henning all shot 45 points.  Dennis Cato, Stephen Craig and Jean-Claude Guerit all shot 44 points while Graham Turner, David Kneeshaw, Kurt Lampe, Michael Langham and Ed DeMarco all shot 43 points.  Special mention to Kurt Lampe who shot a 5 under, 67  for his 43 points.

Course Maintenance

It is coming up to that time of year again where the greens will undergo a heavy renovation.  This includes hollow tyning (coring), top dressing and fertilising.

The Beachside course will undergo this process on Monday 19th February and the Hilltop course greens will be renovated on Monday 26th & Tuesday 27th February.

You may have noticed some darker, barer areas recently on some tees and greens, these areas have a disease called Pythium, caused by excessive heat and humid conditions.

The maintenance team are renovating some of these areas this week and are getting back on top of this issue.  It is a tough problem to manage with so many rounds being played in the last month with rain, humid days, more rain and more humid days.  Pythium loves humidity.

The course has also been recently sprayed with insecticide which then has to be "watered in" with the irrigation system.

With nearly 7,000 rounds at Hilltop and over 5,000 at Beachside in just the last month.  There are divots and pitch marks everywhere.  Could you please assist by fixing yours and other pitch marks while you are waiting to putt.

The Rules of Golf

We would like to clarify the Out of Bounds Rule, in 2019 when new Rule changes came into effect and recommendations were made, we introduced a Local Rule as an alternative to the Stroke and Distance for Lost Ball or Out of Bounds.

However, in 2021 we were informed by both the PGA and Golf NSW that this rule is not appropriate for professional and elite amateur competitions.  As we host multiple events of this status every year, we removed the Local Rule in 2021 and it hasn't been a Local Rule since then.

You must use the Stroke and Distance rule for a "Lost Ball" or a ball "Out of Bounds".  The Rules of Golf are in the link below where you can search for any rules issues.

BYO Alcohol and Bad Behaviour

Unfortunately, we have recently experienced disappointing behaviour from some members during the peak holiday season.

The staff have had to deal with people being intoxicated, refusing to leave, smoking in "no smoking" areas, bringing their own alcohol and also violence.  The majority of these members are now banned from entering Hilltop or Beachside including one member recently banned for life!

A reminder the club has a "zero tolerance" policy for any of this type of behaviour and if you are caught with your own alcohol, you will be asked to leave the course and you will be cited to appear at a disciplinary hearing.  Yes, a "birdie bottle" is bringing your own alcohol and you will be asked to leave the course.  We can't make it any clearer!

Below is a link to the club's "Alcohol Management Policy" which can also be found on our website.

A note from John Holt, General Manager...

After a total of 17 years at Mollymook Golf Club, Nerine Ockwell has recently finished working at the club to focus fulltime on her University studies and the family business at Dolphin Point.  Her contribution to the success of MGC is immeasurable and she has touched the hearts of many people over the years.  We wish her all the best in her future endeavours.
