MOLLYMOOK GOLF CLUB - APRIL E-NEWS

Wednesday 3 April 2024

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the April 24' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

We hope everyone enjoyed the Easter period as we now prepare for the school holidays later this month.  We have had a great run of fine weather which has produced more record golf rounds at both Hilltop and Beachside.  I'm no weatherman but I've been well informed the rain is coming later this week.  We are expecting very heavy rainfall on  Friday and Saturday so please check the heading on the tee sheets in MiClub to see if the course is open or closed and if carts are on or off.  I would start preparing a "plan B" if you are booked in for Saturday!

The Men's Club Championships are on the 20th & 21st, 27th & 28th April so good luck to everyone competing in the championships.

March Golf Summary

We had 9,160 rounds of golf played in March which was 1,660 rounds (22.1%) ahead of budget and 1,531 rounds (20.1%) up on March 2023.  Easter Saturday (30th March) was the busiest day with 495 rounds on one day (262 at Hilltop and 233 at Beachside).

There were 5,638 rounds played at Hilltop and 3,522 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 66.2% of the rounds were from members with 33.8% from visitors.  At Beachside, 53.2% of rounds were from members with 46.8% from visitors.

There were 2,614 competition rounds played at Hilltop with 38 players (double last month) scoring 40 points or better.

Some amazing scores last month included Harrison Punnett with 47 points (Tom Punnett's younger brother) and Michael Devlin with 46 points.  Mitchell Klein and Damien Glover both shot 45 points while Michael Stewart and Henry Whitwell shot 44 points.  Huw Jones, Nicholas Burke, Alec Heller and Steve Carroll had 43 points while Michelle Green had +7 in a Par event.

There were no eagles in February however the tide changed in March with 8 eagles...

1st - Shaun Dickson
4th - Sienna Clarke
10th - Mark Pullinger (on his way to a cracking 24 points)
14th - Wayne Morgan
15th - Adam Ryan
16th - Kurt Lampe and Stephen Pitt
18th - Nick Heath

Another month with no Hole-In-Ones!

New 19th Hole at Hilltop

Not a new clubhouse but an additional hole will be added on the 6th hole at Hilltop as part of the Hilltop Masterplan.  In preparation for the start of course upgrades next year, we are currently going through the "Flora & Fauna" assessment process with an Ecologist before we submit any plans to council.

You may have noticed some trees marked on the 6th hole at Hilltop which are currently being assessed.  We will be planting a lot more trees at Hilltop and potentially adding bird boxes to comply with any recommendations that may come from the "Flora & Fauna" assessment.

Once approved, and the new green is built, this will allow any hole to be out of play while being  renovated, keeping 18 holes in play at all times.  The 6th hole will be split into a Par 3 with Tees from 125m to 175m and a short Par 4 measuring 250m.

"Back to Back" Mixed Foursomes Champions

Congratulations to Karen Bashford and Jayden Granger who successfully defended their Mixed Foursomes Championship title last month.  It was a closely contested event with multiple pairs in contention after the first round.

Karen and Jayden shot a 36 hole total of 165 to win by just two shots from Susan Kelly and Gavin Lee on 167.  Veronica Johnston and Tony Walker were a further 3 shots shots back while past champions Kim and Tim Powell finished on 171.

Special mention to Samantha and Tony Whittle who shot 163 but were not eligible to win the Honour Board event as Sam is a PGA Member.  They did take out the daily prize in Round 1 though!

Club Pennants

The men's pennant season has finished and unfortunately after our Division 2 team finished 1st on the ladder, they were knocked out 3/2 in a very close semi-final against Eden at Moruya Golf Club.

Good luck to our women's teams competing over the next couple of months.

Course Maintenance

We are currently renovating the bridge on the 12th Hole which involves reinforcing the steel structure and then installing new beams across the bridge.  The walkway will then be covered in artificial turf (similar to the 11th) to provide a safer (non slip) surface.  We are getting all the bridges inspected to see what maintenance is required for each bridge.

Next week, we will renovate the 17th Red Tee with new turf including an artificial turf strip at the back of the Tee.  The new Tee will  be turfed with Zoysia grass instead of Kikuyu grass.  This Zoysia grass is currently on the green surrounds at Beachside and on the back Championship Tee on the 11th Hole at Hilltop.

Continuing on from last month, please try and fill in all the divots around your ball while waiting on the fairway to play your shot.  Please repair as many pitch marks as possible on the greens while waiting to putt.  This will help improve the playing surfaces for everyone.

We would like to welcome back Jill Cunningham as our new resident Cook at Hilltop.  Jill worked in the kitchen at Hilltop from 2003 to 2004.  Once Jill settles back in, she will create her own new menu with daily specials available.
