  MOLLYMOOK GOLF CLUB - July 24' e-News

Tuesday 2 July 2024

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the July 24' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

Rain, rain, rain was the theme last month which resulted in 274mm in total.  We seem to be on a cycle where the course just dries out and then we get another heavy downfall.  The course was closed for 3 days due to heavy rain and we had 11 days of "no carts" last month which had a huge impact on golf bookings.  We usually lose 30 to 50% of bookings when it is "walking only". Unfortunately it looks like being a wet winter with more rain on the way.

We did manage to squeeze in the Mollymook Junior Open last Sunday with a great field of 47 juniors from all over NSW and the ACT.

This month, we are pleased to be hosting the NSW Women's Veterans Country 2 Day Tournament along with a few other special events including... the Vets "Life Members" Day, the Milton Ulladulla Bulldogs Charity Golf Day and the Mixed 4BBB Championships

We also have a WILSON Fitting Day on Friday 26th July.

June Golf Summary

We had 6,079 rounds of golf played in June which was 579 rounds (10.5%) above budget.  Sunday 9th June was the busiest day with 359 rounds on one day (195 at Hilltop and 164 at Beachside).

There were 3,463 rounds played at Hilltop and 2,616 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 80% of the rounds were from members with 20% from visitors.  At Beachside, 67% of rounds were from members with 33% from visitors.

There were 1,933 competition rounds played at Hilltop with only 13 players scoring 40 points or better which is the least amount ever to break 40 points.  This is confirmation that it has been tough going in the wet and muddy conditions.

The best score last month was Jordan Jaffrey with 43 points while Stephen Pitt and Laurie Shaw both shot 42 points.  Our Club Captain, Sean Carson was next best with 41 points and shot his best ever round at Hilltop with 73 off the stick.  A couple of other great scores included Heather Stewart with nett 69 in the women's Medal event while Brian Thompson had +4 in a Par event.  Jye Halls still managed to conquer the tough conditions with a 2 under par round of 70.

In a month where anything could happen, even Jon Tucker shot 39 points to shoot the best score on a Saturday.  He then backed up the following week to shoot another 39 points.  Apparently enjoying local ales and wines all over Europe does improve your golf!

Just the one Hole-In-One last month on the 17th Hole by Steve Carroll on Thursday 13th June, well done Steve!

Women's Pennant Winners

Congratulations to our Open Women's Pennant Team (the Dolphins) who went through the Far South Coast & Tablelands season UNDEFEATED to win the Pennant.

It was a close final however they just scraped in with a 3/2 win over Bega at Tura Beach.

Well done ladies and congratulations on a great season.

Kelsey on the main Ladies European Tour (LET)

Last month, I mentioned that Kelsey was showing some form at Hilltop as she flew out to play in Europe.  Only a few days later, Kelsey shot a course record 9 under par in the first round of her first tournament in France.

Kelsey finished 3rd in her first event in France and then joined the main LET Tour playing the Italian Open (45th), the Czech Open (13th) and she just finished playing the Swiss Open where she finished 19th on 5 under par.  Kelsey (pictured in the last round of the Swiss Open), was storming up the leader board until making a triple bogey 8 on the 16th hole which bumped her back to finish just one shot outside of the top 10.

After her last 3 events, Kelsey has moved up to 91st on the Order of Merit which will see her get into all the main LET events (except for the majors) for the rest of the season.

NSW Women's Vets Event

Yesterday, we hosted the 4BBB event played for the NSW Women's Veterans Country Tournament with a strong field of 128 players from all over the ACT & NSW.  The players enjoyed a Welcome Function on Sunday night, golf yesterday and we hosted the Tournament Dinner last night in our Salt & Spencer restaurant at Beachside.  The players enjoyed the course and functions at both Hilltop and Beachside.

The 4BBB event was won by Kerri Keely & Marg Little with 45 points on a count back from Lesley Betsis & Dell Thompson.  Local knowledge was obviously an advantage as all the winners and runners up are Mollymook members!

Unfortunately the wet weather curse struck again as we had to cancel today's Single Stableford event for the tournament.  Pictured right is our Women's Captain, Sue Rayner with Jacqueline Parsons, President of the NSW Women's Veterans Association and the annual trophy.

Mollymook Junior Open

We had one of the largest fields in over a decade for the Mollymook Junior Open with 47 players in total competing in the 18 Hole Open and 9 Hole Cadet tournament.

At the end of the day, there had to be a sudden death playoff between Will Maciver from Gungahlin Lakes and Sean Sammons from Stonecutters Ridge who tied on 78 gross.  Tournament favourite, Bill Eppelstun from Catalina finished 2 shots further back on 80.

The playoff started late in the afternoon and went into the evening (pictured) as the players kept halving the 9th Hole (3 times) until eventually Will Maciver won the event on the 4th extra playoff hole literally in the dark under the clubhouse lights.

Course Maintenance

It has been another challenging month for the maintenance team with bunkers washed out (several times) and its been difficult to get jobs finished due to the wet weather.  The mounds between the 2nd & 3rd holes have finally been completed (turfed) and a new drainage line has been installed between the 3rd, 4th & 6th holes which will help move the water away from the 4th fairway during heavy rain periods.

At Hilltop, the greens and tees have been fertilised while the fairways have been sprayed with Iron to improve the colour through winter.

At Beachside, the greens have been fertilised while the tees and surrounds have been sprayed to prevent the Kikuyu grass entering these areas.  The whole course has also been sprayed to prevent any Poa grass growing.

Wilson Golf Special...

A Wilson special is on for the next 6 weeks, purchase 9 Dynapower clubs and receive a FREE XTRA Cart Bag!

See our PGA Professionals for more information.

It had been tough going on the course recently with Local Rules changing frequently and carts on and off all the time.  The golf staff are trying their best to manage the weather conditions but please remember to check the top of the tee sheet during bad weather to see if the course is open or closed, or if carts are on or off.

A good wet weather tip, wear golf shoes with spikes.  You are increasing the degree of difficulty for yourself playing in rubber sole (spikeless) shoes in wet and muddy conditions.

Regards,

Barry West CCM, PGA
