  MOLLYMOOK GOLF CLUB - September 24' e-News

Monday 2 September 2024

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the September 24' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

Finally, we had a dry month!

August was a huge month of golf with some of our major events being played.  We had a massive field of 180 players in the Mollymook Open which saw a new winner crowned as the Open Champion.  There were a couple of familiar faces winning the men's 4BBB v Par Championship after being postponed from all the wet weather back in May.

The Mollymook Women Golfers hosted their annual Charity Golf Day on Tuesday 13th August which raised $6,500 for the Milton Ulladulla Soup Kitchen who cater for those in need around our local community.  Well done to the women's committee and members for supporting such a great cause.

The Veterans also hosted their annual "Life Member Day" after being postponed in early July.

This Friday, we have a "full field" booked in for the annual Cancer Support Foundation (CSF) Charity Golf Day.  Green Renovations will then commence on the 9th & 10th September followed by "The Scramble" event on Saturday 21st.

There is a lot of information to take in this month so please make sure you read all the way to the bottom of this email!

August Golf Summary

We had 6,830 rounds of golf played in August which was 670 rounds (8.9%) behind budget and 514 rounds (7%) down on August last year.

There were 4,298 rounds played at Hilltop and 2,532 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 85% of the rounds were from members with 15% from visitors.  At Beachside, 62% of rounds were from members with 38% from visitors.

There were 2,592 competition rounds played at Hilltop with 25 players scoring 40 points or better.

The best score last month was Chris Goodley with a great round of 66 nett in the Medal event.  Congratulations to Kim Wight, Bruce George, Jim Fair and Tim Powell who all shot 42 points.  Tim's round of 3 under par, 69 was his best score ever at Hilltop with the highlight being an eagle 3 on the 13th hole (Driver and a 5 iron to 8 feet behind the hole).  Chris Jackson also shot 67 nett in a stroke event.

Congratulations to the ball striking machine, Richard Shearman, who had a Hole-In-One on the 5th hole last week.  That was Richard's third Hole-In-One at Hilltop!

Match Play Knockouts

Most matches have been played within the allocated date range and its looking positive to have them all completed as per the schedule.   Months of wet weather forced a lot of matches to be rescheduled.  Please ensure any outstanding matches are completed asap (check the Notice Board on the Hilltop Deck).

Here is a brief update on the current match play events….

Women’s Single - Quarter Final Stage

 Women’s 4BBB - Round 2 & Quarter Final Stage

Captain’s Trophy - Final Stage

John Coleman Trophy -   Final Stage

4BBB v Par Championship

Congratulations to Brian Russell and Tim Powell on winning their first 4BBB v Par Championship.  Brian and Tim won the men's Foursomes Championship last year so they have now added another team event to their trophy list.  Tim also successfully defended the Club Championship title earlier this year so it is proving to be quite a year for Tim who seems to be getting better with age.

Our course superintendent, Mark Pullinger, teamed up with the assistant superintendent, Jackson Sylvester to finish in second place this year, just 2 shots behind the winners.  Just one shot further back were the pairings of Sean Carson & Richard Shearman, and Graham & Mark Beasley.

In the Nett event, Jean-Claude Guerit & Grant Ross won this year's nett event by 2 shots with a great score of +17 from Campbell Gaunt & Matthew Shrubb.

Mollymook Open Championship

Congratulations to Sean Underwood (pictured) from Bankstown GC who won the Mollymook Open with scores of 76 - 74 (150) to win in a playoff (by default) from Noah Bricknell from Goulburn GC.  It was the first time Sean has ever played the Hilltop course and he obviously liked what he saw.

Ryan Iredale from St Georges Basin won the nett event on a countback from Kane West from Catalina who both finished on 139 total.

Stephen Campbell from Burns GC Belconnen won the Stableford event with a total of 73 points over the 2 days.  Please click on the link below to view the full prize winners list...

Hilltop Locker Room Renos

Work has commenced on the men's toilets at Hilltop and renovations will soon start in the men's locker room area.  During the renovation period, there are three temporary toilets located outside along the southern side of the Hilltop clubhouse (behind the locker rooms).

The locker room floorspace will be reduced and the clubhouse floorspace expanded as part of the renovations.  A new bathroom vanity will be added near the showers.

The women's locker room area will be totally renovated in August/September next year.

Please note, everything in the men's locker rooms needs to be removed by this Friday (6th September).  We have notified all the members who currently rent lockers however there are a lot of additional mystery items floating around.

Slow Play

Slow play is one of the main causes of frustration for players and we need all members to work with us to improve this aspect of the game.

The club has implemented MiClub's Pace of Play module to assist in managing pace of play at our club. In conjunction with this new tool, the club has been using a pace of play policy for over 12 months which details expectations, processes and consequences.  We encourage all members to familiarise themselves with the policy (see below).

This new system makes its much easier to identify groups that have fallen out of position but it will work even better if everyone does the following...

  • Start scoring with the app at the beginning of the round and finalise score at the completion of round to obtain correct round time data.
  • Enter each hole score either at the green you just played or at the next tee.
  • In the MiScore menu ensure that 'locations enabled' is set to on.
  • Don't lock your phone once a score is entered, allow the screen saver to engage.
  • Allow Notifications.

The MiScore App location tracking functionality is set to only track a person's location whilst using the App and within the boundary of the course.

Pace of Play Policy as of 4th September 2023

  • Should your group fall more than one hole behind, your group will receive a warning for slow play.
  • Should your position in the field not improve after the warning, each player will receive a two shot penalty.
  • This will be implemented by golf staff monitoring play during or at the end of your round should your group finish 15 minutes or more behind the group in front of you (based on rounds taking over 4 hours).
Every group should be able to keep up with the group in front.  We've had several players comment "we are keeping ahead of the group behind us!".  Your position in the field is to keep up with the group in front of you, not stay ahead of the group behind you.

Course Maintenance

At Hilltop, the tree root pruning has now commenced around green surrounds and tees.  The green renovations started today at Beachside and will be done at Hilltop next Monday (9th) and Tuesday (10th).

The courses have been a mess after several days of extreme winds and unfortunately we had to cancel the Vets Interclub again today due to over 100km/h winds.  The maintenance staff have a lot on their plate with green renovations and our premier PGA events coming up in October and November.

Members are welcome to assist trying to clean up all the sticks and branches next Monday & Tuesday at Hilltop while the course is closed.  Contact Sue Rayner at volunteers@mollymookgolf.com.au if you would like to help.

19th Green @ Hilltop

Ryan Van Der Veen from Van Der Veen Designs has been appointed to construct the new additional green on the 6th hole at Hilltop.  Ryan is currently the Project and Construction Manager at Glenelg Golf Club in Adelaide and brings a wealth of design and construction experience to our club.

The new green project will start on Monday 11th November.  Please click the link below to read Ryan's profile...
