  MOLLYMOOK GOLF CLUB - November 24' e-News

Saturday 2 November 2024

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the November 24' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

We are already into our peak golf season for major events after recently hosting the PGA Legends NSW Senior Masters, Women's Club Championships and the Family Of League Charity Golf Day.  This week, we host the Men's Mollymook Senior Open, the $50,000 WPGA Women's NSW Open Regional Qualifier followed by the Men's Foursomes Championship in a couple of weeks.

We have now cleared the site for the new additional "spare hole" (19th green) on the 6th hole at Hilltop and the Course Architect, Ryan Van Der Veen and Construction Team arrive next week to  to commence work on the new green from the 11th November.

Our club was recently named as a finalist for "Golf Club of the Year" (Regional) at the 2024 NSW Golf Industry Awards.  The winner is announced on the 11th November so at least we know we are in the Top 3.  This is a great achievement for the club to be recognised within the golfing industry.

October Golf Summary

We had 9,162 rounds of golf played in October which was 662 rounds (7.8%) ahead of budget and 805 rounds (9.6%) up on October last year.

There were 5,232 rounds played at Hilltop and 3,930 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 74% of the rounds were from members with 26% from visitors.  At Beachside, 55% of rounds were from members with 45% from visitors.

There were 2,834 competition rounds played at Hilltop with 42 players scoring 40 points (68 nett or +4) or better.

Some great scoring last month and the best score was from Greg Daly with with a great round of 46 points.  Congratulations to Geoff Smith who shot his age for the first time with 78 off the stick for a 64 Nett.  Geoff's round also included a Hole-In-One on the 5th Hole.

Some other amazing rounds included Gavin Brinkman, with a +7 in a Par event.  Jenny Moore and William Henderson both scored 45 points while Ben Hatcher and Jonny Staples both shot 43 points.  Pattie Kerr, Kristine Harrod and Ken Smith all shot nett 67s in stroke events.

Special mention to Karen Bashford for scoring 7 birdies in her 38 points last Tuesday.

Hole-In-One

Congratulations to Geoff Smith and John Mott who both had Hole-In-Ones on the 5th Hole.

Eagles

The most eagles of any month to date (the recent temporary tee on the 6th don't count as eagles).

Well done to the following golfers for making an eagle during October:

1st Hole - Deb Charles and Tim Powell

2nd Hole - Sienna Clarke

4th Hole - Karen Bashford

6th Hole - Trevor Zappas and Richard Shearman

8th Hole - Mark Pullinger (again)

18th Hole - Greg Williams, Sean Carson, Peter Keeley and Sue Adams

Karen Bashford cruised to victory in the Women's Club Championships to win her third championship title.  Karen held off fast finishing defending champion, Veronica Johnston to win the event by 13 shots.  Deb Charles was another 11 shots further back to finish in 3rd place.

Jenny Kemp won Division 2 on the first hole of a sudden death playoff from Kristine Harrod after they both tied on a total of 406.   Rhonda Waller finished one shot out of the playoff with 407.

In Division 3, another very close contest with Sharon Wykes winning by just one shot from Gwenda Turnbull with a 4 round total of 435.

Chris Taylor wins again

To say that Queenslander Chris Taylor likes the Hilltop course is probably an understatement.  Chris has now played in three PGA Legends NSW Senior Masters events and finished 1st, 2nd and 1st.

Chris went straight to the front after round 1 with a bogey free, 4 under par round of 68.  There were some big names breathing down his neck including Peter Senior, Peter Lonard and Andre Stolz.  Chris was cruising along in the final round but bogeys on 14 & 15 allowed the field to get a bit closer.  Chris played the last few holes well, with a birdie on the 17th and a solid par on 18 to give him his 11th win on the Legends Tour this year.  Chris won by 4 shots from Peter Senior who finished one shot ahead of Peter Lonard and Adam Henwood.  Peter Lonard played the first hole in round 1 and then realised he had 15 clubs in his bag so that 2 shot penalty was costly.

A big thank you to all the volunteers who once again made the event a huge success.

Family of League Day

A great day was had at the second Family of League Charity Golf Day at our Hilltop course.  With a good field of 120 players including some of rugby league royalty with event Patron and 14th Immortal, Ron Coote (pictured), playing and handing out the prizes.  It was a double celebration with Ron celebrating his 80th Birthday on the day so his family and friends were also in attendance.

The event raised a huge amount for the Family of League Foundation and thanks to our local members who were heavily involved in organising the event.  Special thanks to Phil Barry, Craig Wise, Dave Blunden and Craig Saunders for all their hard work behind the scenes.

Jye Halls dominating

After winning the Queensland Strokeplay Championship earlier this year, Jye recently won the coveted, Keperra Bowl.

Jye finished in a 3 way tie with rounds of 66,68,70 & 72 and then birdied the 1st playoff hole to win his second championship in Queensland.

After winning that event, Jye jetted off to the UAE to play in the Emirates Golf Federation's UAE Cup.  Jye shot rounds of 69,70 & 67 to finish tied for Runner Up in the Elite Men's Division.

Jye now has starts coming up in some big NSW and interstate events so we wish him all the best taking on the world's best amateurs.

Speaking of home grown talent, Kelsey Bennett has just returned home after playing all over Europe and the United States.  Kelsey now has the option to head back to Europe with limited starts in on the main LET Tour or have full playing rights on the LET Access Tour.  After just missing out in the second stage at the LPGA Qualifying School in Florida, Kelsey also now has status on the Epson Tour in the United States.

Decision time for 2025...

19th Green @ Hilltop

The trees have been cleared after our Tree Removal Permit was approved by council and work is about to commence on building the spare green on the 6th Hole at Hilltop.  This will enable us to start renovation work on the 9th hole next year while keeping 18 holes in play at all times.  The 6th will be split into two holes when any hole gets taken out of play for renovation work.

Renovation Project Team

Two members were recently appointed to join the Hilltop Course Upgrade Project Team.  These member representatives will act as a conduit, relaying member feedback to the Project Team.

We welcome Sue O'Brien and Tony Marks (pictured) who were selected by the Board and thank you to all the candidates who applied.

Hilltop Clubhouse Renovations

The men's toilets and Locker Room are now complete and would probably win the "most improved" award.

Here are a few photos...

We hope you support our cooks, Jill and Caroline.
