  MOLLYMOOK GOLF CLUB - December 24' e-News

Monday 9 December 2024

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the December 24' edition of Mollymook Golf Club e-News.

Wow! What a month of golf last month, we hosted several of our premier events including the Mollymook Senior Open, NSW Open Women's Regional Qualifier, Men's Foursomes Championship and Patron's Day.

We also had a few very wet days with 154mm of rain in total last month and most of it falling on 3 days.

Our Club was recognised at the recent NSW Golf Industry Awards winning "Club of the Year (Regional)".  This is a huge accolade for the club and big thank you to all the members who support the club throughout the year.  A special thank you to all our volunteers who make every big event a huge success.

Our new "spare" green on the 6th hole at Hilltop is coming along nicely with the green seeded with the "Pure Distinction" Bent Grass last week.  The zoysia turf surrounds have also been layed and the final stage of turfing will be completed this week.

This will be the last Golf eNews before Christmas so on behalf of the Board, Management & Staff, we would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  We hope everyone has an enjoyable time with their friends and family this holiday season.

Board Of Directors...

At the recent AGM, there was a change in the Board of Directors with two new Directors being elected by the members.  Congratulations to Mark Stewart and Jim Johnson on being elected as Directors and also to Dawn Makeham who was re-elected for another term.

A big thank you to the outgoing President, David Hume and to Director, Brendan Bull for all their hard work behind the scenes over the years.

We welcome new President, Ben Hatcher to his position after serving as Vice-President for several years and congratulations to Dawn Makeham who was elected Vice President by the Board.  Sean Carson will continue on as Club Captain.

November Golf Summary

We had 8,134 rounds of golf played in November which was 634 rounds (8.5%) ahead of budget and 538 rounds (7.1%) up on November last year.

There were 4,892 rounds played at Hilltop and 3,242 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 68% of the rounds were from members with 32% from visitors.  At Beachside, 55% of rounds were from members with 45% from visitors which is the same percentage as last month!

There were 2,392 competition rounds played at Hilltop with 50 players scoring 40 points (68 nett or +4) or better.

Some great scoring last month including new junior member, Angus Donnelly who shot 52 points and saw his new handicap reduce by 24 shots after one round!  Other impressive stableford scores included Elita Parszuto with 45 points and Heather Stewart with 44 points.  Mike Wakley, Mike Crowell, Noeleen McAlister and Ted Walker all shot 43 points.  Special mention to Ted's effort which was a 74 off the stick beating his age by 9 shots.  Even Bernhard Langer hasn't done that (yet).

Some cracking single stroke rounds include Andrew Lees with a nett 64 which was 70 off the stick.  Alan Purdue 65 nett while Paul Lavelle and Kieran Quaine both shot 66 nett.  Another great score was Kurt Lampe with 68 nett playing off scratch.   In a Par Event, Dorothy Potts managed +6 which is another impressive score.

Hole-In-One

Congratulations to Ted Walker who had a Hole-In-One on the 5th Hole during his magical 74 off the stick.

Eagles

Only one last month despite the very good scores with Brian Russell making an eagle on the 10th Hole.

In other major events last month, Wally Gregory from Federal GC won the Mollymook Senior Open by just one shot from local member, Mark Williams.  Wally shot 76 gross.  Paul Morgan from Kareela GC won the Nett event with 69 nett.

Frank & Kurt Lampe

2024 Foursomes Champions

The father and son team of Frank and Kurt Lampe finally took out the Men's Foursome's Championship after being close several times over the years.

It was a close 36 holes however their consistency with 79, 79 for a 158 total was enough to win by 3 shots over defending champions Brian Russell and Tim Powell.  The red hot favourites, Mark Pullinger and Chris McLean didn't quite combine finishing 19 shots off the pace and 3rd from the wrong end in the Nett event.

Tim Innes and Marko Stojic won the Nett event on a count back from Victor Nash and Mike Nestler on 150.  Scott Bowman and Brad Parker also missed out with 150.

Wenyung Keh too good!

New Zealand's Wenyung Keh emerged as the winner in the Women's NSW Open Regional Qualifying event.  The 27-year-old from Auckland finished the tournament at even par, edging out the competition by just one shot.

Despite her strong performance, Keh admitted she was a bit uncertain coming down the final hole.

"When I was walking down 18, I actually didn't know what was happening," she recalled.

"I thought I was still in contention and I'd just try to birdie the last, but I had to make that six-footer for par. But it feels good, still hasn't kicked in yet."

Staying calm and collected was the key to her victory.  Wenyung shot rounds of 72, 72 for a 2 under par total of 144.

Breanna Gill and Justice Bosio both finished just one shot behind on 145.

Spare Green Update...

The Course Architect, Ryan Van Der Veen and Senior Shaper, Matt Milner have now completed their side of the project with the construction of the new spare green on the 6th Hole at Hilltop now complete.

Mother nature did try its best to wash the new green away a couple of weeks ago however Ryan repaired the front of the green with his excavator the following morning.

There is still a bit of turf to be layed for the green surrounds this week and then it is watch it grow time!

The bunker shape is finished however the bunker base and sand will be installed in February as the hole will not be in play until mid next year.

A big thank you to Mark Pullinger and his team who have done a great job assisting throughout the project in providing labour to move soil around, assist with drainage & irrigation installation, seeding the green and laying the turf surrounds.  Russell Lewis Excavations also assisted with the earthworks and soil transport.

Below are the progress shots of the new spare green...

13th Green Damage

Does anyone know who decided to souvenir a large rectangle of turf from the 13th green?

This happened some time last Monday night so if you know of anyone who suddenly has nice rectangle of Bent Grass in their yard, please let us know.

It is approximately 30cm x 60cm.

Thank you to our hard working volunteers who help out throughout the year.

Jye & Kelsey

Keep an eye out for the Jye and Kelsey throughout the summer with the Australian golf tournaments in full swing.  Jye Halls was the only amateur to make the cut at the NSW Open and he finished in 12th position upstaging a lot of the professionals.  Also congratulations to Kelsey Bennett who finished 7th in the Australian Open recently.  Kelsey shot the second lowest final round in tough, windy conditions to storm up the leaderboard.

Kelsey is consistently playing well after winning the Pro-Am event at Hilltop, finished 10th in the tournament, she then finished 14th at Wagga Wagga, 7th in the Australian Open and then 3rd at Narrabri last week.

Good golfing this month and enjoy the festive season!

Regards,

Barry West
