  MOLLYMOOK GOLF CLUB - January 25' e-News

Thursday 2 January 2025

Dear Proshop Proshop,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Management and Staff, we would like to wish everyone a "Happy New Year" and "Good Golfing" in 2025!

We are now in "peak tourist season" this week with over 300 players a day at Hilltop and over 200 at Beachside every day.  The Beachside Clubhouse is also catering for over 1,000 meals a day at the moment.  A big thank you to all the staff you have been working through the holiday period  as it can be quite difficult to manage when people turn up late for golf bookings due to the holiday traffic.

All the annual golf events are now finalised with the exception of the Women's Regional Qualifying event for the NSW Open with the date "to be confirmed" from the WPGA.  Please click the link below to download the 2025 Fixture Book...

December Golf Summary

We had 9,583 rounds of golf played in December which was 583 rounds (6.5%) ahead of budget and 563 rounds (6.2%) up on December last year.

There were 5,696 rounds played at Hilltop and 3,887 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 66% of the rounds were from members with 34% from visitors.  At Beachside, 40% of rounds were from members with 60% from visitors.

There were 2,640 competition rounds played at Hilltop with 54 players scoring 40 points (68 nett) or better.

Some great scoring with huge fields and a special mention to one of our up and coming junior members, Harry Walsh who shot 48 points!  Other impressive stableford scores included Matt Bryant, Thomas Hatcher-Nee and John Martin with 46 points and John King with 45 points.  Terence Wilson, Simon Hayes, Margot McGinness and Leslie Koltai all shot 44 points.

Hole-In-One

Congratulations to Rob Sommerville who had the last Hole-In-One for the year on the 9th Hole, on the 28th December.

Eagles

6th - Greg Williams
7th - Christine Hadland
18th - Mark Pullinger (again)

Kelsey secures her Card

Congratulations to Kelsey Bennett who topped off 2024 with a win on the Australian Tour and then secured her full playing rights for 2025 on the Ladies European Tour (LET).

Kelsey won the NSW Open Regional Qualifying Event at Dubbo and then headed straight to the airport to fly to Morocco for the final stage of the qualifying.  Kelsey showed her resilience during the 5 round tournament.  Kelsey was inside the top 12 after 2 rounds but a 3rd round 76 put her way back in the field.  Kelsey fought her way back with a 4th round 67 and final round 69 to finish tied 19th and gain her full playing rights for 2025.  Only the top 20 and ties make it so Kelsey's total of 10 under par was the cut off to make it.

Kelsey will now play in 30 events across 20 countries this year for a total prizemoney of 39 million Euros.

In between events, Kelsey also managed to make a quick appearance at Hilltop for the Women's Annual Presentation which was well received.

Jye is mixing it with the Pros

Congratulations to Jye Halls who is continuing to play well in elite amateur and professional events this summer.

The photo attached is a snapshot of the lowest round averages on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia.

Jye currently has the 4th lowest average on the Tour and he is the only amateur in the Top 10 rankings which is a great effort.  This is a very rare achievement!

Jye is currently in Victoria and is about to tee it up in the Australian Master of the Amateurs at Southern Golf Club.  The event starts tomorrow and live scoring is on the following link...

We wish Jye all the best with his golf in 2025.

Course Maintenance Update...

The dry spell continues with just 26.2mm of rain in December and it was also quite hot last month with several days over 30 degrees.  The hot and humid conditions with Bent grass greens are a perfect recipe for  turf diseases.  Some greens have suffered from "dry patch" and pest damage so they have been sprayed, aerated and fertilised to help them recover quickly.

Hilltop -

  • All closely mown areas and rough areas "in play"  have been sprayed with plant growth regulator.
  • Water transfer from the top dam (11th/12th) to main irrigation dam (10th) has begun.  We have enough water to continue watering fairways and roughs for another month.  If we do not get any meaningful rain by then, we will start to restrict the irrigation and eliminate watering the rough.  There are currently two courses on the south coast that are restricted to watering greens only.
  • All bunkers have been trimmed and levelled.
  • Trimming of sprinklers and repairs is an ongoing process.
  • The Tees will be aerated, seeded and fertilized once the tourist traffic reduces.

New 19th Green on the 6th Hole -

  • Has been sprayed with fungicide and a liquid fertilizer.  A leaf absorbed fertilizer at low rates will be applied during "grow in" as optimum amendments were added to the sand profile during construction.
  • Irrigation has now been completed, with new valve boxes installed on the 4th fairway.
  • The outer surrounds will be sprigged with Kikuyu next week.
  • The Zoysia surrounds have been mown twice at 20mm and will eventually be cut at 10mm.
  • Green and surrounds will be top dressed again next week to help improve the surface.

Beachside -

  • General maintenance is ongoing with a priority on the Kikuyu grass invasion on Tees and Zoysia surrounds.
  • Bunker on 3rd hole is currently GUR, as drainage gravel has come to the surface. Removal and a top up of sand will happen over the next few weeks.

Event Changes for 2025...

We have a few changes to some major events for 2025 including the following...

  • Men's Club Championships - Saturday 3rd, Sunday 4th & Saturday 10th May - This event will be held over 3 rounds in total this year.  The format will change for C Grade which will be a Stableford event.  A & B Grades will continue to play Stroke with the lowest stroke score (scratch) after 54 holes winning the 2025 Club Championship.  The final round will be a seeded draw for the leading 8 players in each grade.
  • Captain's Trophy - 16 players will qualify this year.  The lowest 4 Nett/Stableford scores in the Club Championships from A, B & C grade will automatically qualify (12 players).  The remaining 4 qualifying spots will be the 4 best overall Nett/Stableford scores from the whole field (after 54 holes) who have not already qualified in the top 4 in their grade.  There will no longer be a Match Play event for the lowest 8 gross scores from the championships.
  • Women's Club Championships - Tuesday 13th, Sunday 18th, Tuesday 20th & Sunday 25th May - The Women's Club Championships will be played in May on consecutive Tuesdays and Sundays with the final round being on Sunday 25th May.  There will be specific tee times allocated to the Women's Club Championship players from the 1st Tee on Sunday 18th and Sunday 25th.  The final round will be a seeded draw for each grade.
