  MOLLYMOOK GOLF CLUB - May 25' e-News

Friday 2 May 2025

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the May 2025 e-newsletter.

The dry spell came to an end!  We had 315.2mm of rain in April with 315mm falling in the last 10 days which caused us all sorts of issues resulting in very little golf being played recently.  The Marine Rescue Charity Day (scheduled for today) has been postponed to Friday 30th May and the Men's Club Championships (scheduled to start tomorrow) have been rescheduled to the 23rd, 24th & 30th of August.  With the Men's Masters Pennant season running through May, June and into July for finals, these dates are the earliest we could reschedule the championships working around other major events.

Please note, due to the postponement of the men's club championships this weekend and next Saturday, the tee sheets are now open for women to play in the open medley stableford events each day.  Unfortunately, there will be no carts this weekend so walking only!  In addition to the men's Monthly Medal tomorrow, the open stableford event will be a 4 club event (3 clubs + putter) to make it an easier walk.  Please bring pull trolleys if you have them this weekend as we won't have enough for a large field (or carry 4 clubs with no bag for the stableford event).

The rain has finally stopped (we think) and we look forward to welcoming all the players to the Mollymook Women's Open next week.  Local member, Sienna Clarke, is the hot favourite to win the Championship for the 3rd year in a row.

Congratulations to our Women's Bronze Division Team who played in the Women's Golf Illawarra Association and won the Pennant in their first year.  Special mention also to the Division 1 Team who finished Runners Up this year.  A great effort playing in a new District (see more below)...

April Golf Summary

We had 8,330 rounds of golf played in April which was 670 rounds (7.4%) behind budget and 113 rounds (1.4%) up on April last year.

There were 5,080 rounds played at Hilltop and 3,250 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 76% of the rounds were from members with 24% from visitors.  At Beachside, 51% of rounds were from members with 49% from visitors.

There were 2,716 competition rounds played at Hilltop with 41 players scoring 40 points (68 nett) or better.  What a difference preferred lies and slower greens (after the rain)  makes to the 40 or better club, it was just 16 in the previous month!

Some great scores include Mal Crockett with 46 points while Michael Devlin shot 45 points.  Both Blake McKenzie and Daniel Boone shot 44 points while Shane King, Andrew Lees, Bodhi Charlton, Gary McLennan, Toby Kells, Graham Buckley and Gary Vandoros all shot 43 points.  A couple of special mentions, Andrew Lees' round of 43 points was a 3 under par 69 that included 7 birdies.  Karen Bashford had a great 68 nett in the Medal event and then followed up with 42 points a couple of weeks later.  Karen is now down to a handicap of 4.7 which is some good golfing.

There was just one Eagle last month - Kevin Roberts on the 8th Hole.

As mentioned earlier, the Mollymook Whales have emerged as the 2025 WGI Pennant Champions in the Bronze Division, marking a  fantastic debut season in the new zone.  The Champion team - Sue O'Brien (Captain),  Gai Bedford, Jaqui Bowen, Michelle Green, Jenny Moore and Penny Paterson - claimed victory in a hard-fought final showcasing determination and impressive skill under pressure.

In another great result, Mollymook Division 1 team - Sue Rayner (Captain), Sue Adams, Karen Bashford, Deb Charles, Sienna Clarke, Ros Hughes, Veronica Johnston, Sue Kelly, Kim Powell, Jenny Rymill and Trish Wickes - finished Runners-Up in their division, adding to the club's strong showing in this year's Pennant tournament.

This outstanding performance from both teams is all the more impressive considering it was Mollymook's first year competing in the WGI Pennant tournament after making the move from the FSC&TL zone. For many players it was also their first time playing on several Illawarra courses, making their success even more commendable.  See the Final teams below...

Kelsey in Career Best Form

Our own Kelsey Bennett recently finished 3rd in the South African Women's Open with scores of 69-68-73-67 for a 277 total finishing just 3 shots behind Perrine Delacour at Erinvale Country and Golf Estate, South Africa.  This was Kelsey's best finish on the Ladies European Tour (LET).

Kelsey has been enjoying time at home this week before she heads off to South Korea on Sunday to play in the $2,000,000 USD Aramco Korea Championship on the 9th - 11th May.

After Korea, it is back to Europe for several months to play in 16 different countries throughout the remainder of the LET season.  Kelsey is currently 16th on the LET Order of Merit after playing in 4 events this year.

We wish her all the best for 2025!

Jye Halls heading overseas to play against the world's best

Jye will be heading off overseas later this month to the United Kingdom and the United States.

He will be playing against the world's best amateur golfers in the most prestigious amateur golf events in the world.

Jye will be playing in the Scottish Amateur, St.Andrews Links Championship and the British Amateur in the UK.

In the States, he is hoping to get into the US Amateur through pre-qualification then play in the Transmiss Amateur, Monroe Invitational, Canadian Amateur and The Porter Cup.

The club is hoping to put together a fundraising golf event to help raise funds to assist Jye financially compete all over the world as an amateur.  The only problem with elite amateur golf is it is a great expense with no financial return (ask Jye's dad).

We will advise all members when this event gets locked in.

Course Maintenance Update...

Spare Hole - Same as last month, it is ready to go!  We were supposed to be playing the new hole this week but the wet weather forced the 17th hole bridge renovation project and cart path work to be postponed.  With so many big events this month, we are rescheduling this work to happen in June.

Later this month (weather permitting), we will also be installing a new safety fence along the left side of the 16th Tees.

Due to the busy Easter period and all the wet weather since, the course maintenance team are chasing their tails trying to catch up on the current maintenance projects listed below.

The priority is getting the bunkers repaired over the weekend and mowing wherever possible in preparation for the Women's Open starting on Monday.  Once we get back on top of general maintenance, the team will start working their way through the projects.

Please click the following link for the list of maintenance projects...
