  MOLLYMOOK GOLF CLUB - March 26' e-News

Friday 6 March 2026

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the March 2026 e-Newsletter.

This week marked a very special occasion for the club when the new 13th green opened for play at Hilltop on Wednesday.  After 11 years of planning renovations, the 13th hole is now back in play after a 19 week renovation period.  The construction team haven't wasted any time in attacking the 14th green which has now been totally removed over the last few days in preparation to be rebuilt from the bottom up (or from about 40cm below the surface to be precise). The 14th hole is now "out of play" for the next 18 weeks.

Some exciting news in our staffing structure with our Course Superintendent, Mark Pullinger moving to the role of "Construction Manager" permanently.  The club has appointed Jackson Sylvester as the new Course Superintendent effective immediately.  We would like to thank Mark for his 29 years of service on the course maintenance team and we all know he will put in a huge effort during the Hilltop Couse Enhancement Program over the next 6 years.  Congratulations to Jackson on being promoted to Course Superintendent after all your hard work as Assistant Super!

In the last month, we hosted the Women's Opening Day, the Women's Golf Illawarra Opening Day, men's and women's pennant matches, the Gubbins Mitre 10 Corporate Day and the Adam & Alex Memorial Day last Friday. It has been another huge month of golf.

We are hosting "International Women's Day" this Sunday with golf at Hilltop and a separate Lunch function at Beachside.  Our first Honour Board event for the year is on Sunday 22nd March with the Mixed Foursomes Championship (36 holes).

February Golf Summary

We had 7,978 rounds of golf played in February which was 174 rounds (2.1%) down on last year.

There were 5,113 rounds played at Hilltop and 2,865 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 68% of the rounds were from members with 32% from visitors.  At Beachside, 55% of rounds were from members with 45% from visitors.

There were 2,355 competition rounds played at Hilltop with only 11 players scoring 40 points (+4, or 68 nett) or better.

Some great scores include Deb Charles and Alison Wade with 44 points while Barry Kemp and Gareth Parker scored 43 points.

There were a few eagles last month...

7th - Lachlan Barr
11th - Sean Dickson and Russell Baker

The men's and women's Pennant Seasons are now well underway.  In the Women's Golf Illawarra District, our Division 1 team is currently in 6th place however one win could see them jump up into 3rd place.  In Division 2, Mollymook is leading the competition while both our Division 3 teams are in 2nd place in their respective groups.  The women's pennants continues through to the end of March.

In the men's South Coast District, Division 1 is currently dead last (flashbacks of 2025) while Div 2 is in the middle of the pack and our Seniors team is currently in 2nd place.  There is just one round to go in the men's division so all our hopes are on the Senior team this year!

Adam & Alex Golf Day

This year was big, real big!

A new fundraising record was set last week from the annual Adam & Alex Memorial Golf Day with $20,788 raised for Cancer Research.  The funds will go towards GI Cancer Trials and the Charlie Teo Foundation.

The Lane and Paduano families do a great job behind the scenes putting this event together with lots of great raffle and auction prizes.

A big thank you to everyone who supported the event this year.  Special thanks to Ian Broderick who volunteered his Auctioneer services and managed to pump up the charity pool.

13th Hole "NOW OPEN"

We are very proud to have the new 13th green open for play this week.  There has been a lot of positive feedback about the green, bunkering and surrounds which blend into the new 14th Tee area.

We have had a few golf journalists having a look recently so keep an eye out in the golf magazines about to be released soon!

14th Hole "NOW CLOSED"

This is the view looking from what was the back of the 14th green back down the fairway.  Nothing left!

Our Architect, Ryan Van Der Veen has been busy this week getting the sub base ready to start reshaping and rebuilding to create the new green.

We look forward to a much larger and much flatter green with a little bit of movement to keep it interesting.

The new fairway bunker on the left side of the fairway has also been excavated.

If you are using carts, could you please go to the left of the green as the path is open all the way around the green to the 15th Tee.  If you are walking up the 14th, please head right of the green towards the next Tee.

The signage will change once work commences on the 15th Tee areas.  Green and fairway bunker concepts below.

New Golf Cart Policy

We have spent some time revising our Golf Cart Policy for members and visitors for both club owned, and privately owned golf carts.

We are investing a lot of money into improving the golf course so we would appreciate if you could try and assist by keeping away from tees and greens and utilising the cart paths where possible.

We have already seen a member drive straight through the new tee garden between the 16th fairway and the 14th tee while another member parked on the fringe of the 18th green recently.

The golf staff have been instructed to be "more strict" on reporting poor cart driving which will result in a "written warning" for the first occurrence and disciplinary action may be initiated for a second occurrence.

A reminder that the golf staff are following the Operating Rules of the new Golf Cart Policy and simply doing their job.

Course Maintenance

The main focus over the last month has been getting on top of all the green renovations at Beachside and Hilltop.  The weather hasn't been kind for green renovations and it has taken the team a couple of extra days to try and get the top dressing done.  The sand needs to be dry before they can rub it in and there hasn't been much sunlight for a while!

This year we also sanded the greens before aerating (coring).  The staff used 16mm solid tynes that were spaced 100mm apart so now you know exactly how big the holes are on the greens.

We also had two teams of arborists at Hilltop earlier this week removing dead trees and dangerous limbs from around the course.  This is an expensive exercise and  unfortunately rarely does anyone even notice anything different.

Lets hope the weather fines up soon.

Good golfing in March and its hard to believe we are now only 4 weeks away from Easter.  It feels like Christmas was only a few weeks ago.

Regards,

Barry West CCM, PGA
