  MOLLYMOOK GOLF CLUB - June 25' e-News

Tuesday 3 June 2025

Dear Proshop Proshop,

Welcome to the June 2025 e-newsletter.

Wet, wet, wet again!  231.4mm of rain in May which adds up to around 550mm over the last 6 weeks.

It has been tough going over the last month with the course being closed a few times and a real struggle to get carts on the course.  The course maintenance staff are doing it tough.  We have just reintroduced Preferred Lies in "All General Areas" around the course as many areas are still too wet to access with mowers making it difficult to find your ball, let alone hit it!

Due to the wet weather, the Vets Club Championships has been postponed until the 24th September and 1st of October.

On a more positive note, we did get the Mollymook Women's Open, Women's Club Championships, Vets Legacy Day and Marine Rescue Charity Day all played last month.

As we approach the shortest daylight period of the year, a quick reminder about slow play, please keep up with the group in front of you!  It is that simple.  Last Saturday, a couple of groups in the competition couldn't finish their rounds as it was too dark.  Some earlier groups in the field finished over a full hole behind the group in front of them which saw the round times go from 4h 20m, to 4h 40m, to over 5 hours and they ran out of daylight.

It is obviously still very wet in certain areas on both golf courses so please use caution when walking on hills and slopes around the course.  Golf shoes with spikes come in very handy in wet and muddy conditions.  Wearing sneakers or spikeless shoes on wet grass can be quite slippery!  Please detour around steep banks and use caution.

May Golf Summary

We had 5,894 rounds of golf played in May which was 641 rounds (12.2%) up on last year.

There were 3,659 rounds played at Hilltop and 2,235 rounds played at Beachside.  At Hilltop, 85% of the rounds were from members with 15% from visitors.  At Beachside, 71% of rounds were from members with 29% from visitors.

There were 2,240 competition rounds played at Hilltop with 24 players scoring 40 points (68 nett) or better.

Some great, and one amazing score by Charlie Smyth, who shot a nett 63 in the Medal event.  Charlie's handicap reduced 11.3 after that effort!  Other impressive scores include Gareth Lawson with 44 points and Zane Wilson, Ryan Clugston (again), Liz McGuire and Alan Gerrard all with 43 points

There were two Eagles last month - Scott McCormick on the 6th Hole and Mark Smith on the 13th Hole.  It was Scott's first eagle in his extensive golfing career.  He was playing off 15.7 just 12 months ago and recently got down to 7.0 while still working full time (allegedly).

The men's "Master Pennants" is underway and Mollymook is currently in second position on the table after 3 rounds.  The first match at home was washed out when the course went underwater so that match was halved.  They lost their second match away at Shoalhaven Heads but played at home on Sunday for a convincing 7/1 victory over Kiama.

Sienna wins again...

Our own Sienna Clark won the Mollymook Women's Open for the third year in a row after defeating Jane Wall from Kiama by 3 shots.  Sienna shot a 36 hole total of 154.

In Division 1 Nett, golf staff member Deb Charles won the event with 148 Nett from Roslyn Hughes.

In Division 2, Kay Brennan from Jamberoo won the Stableford with 67 points defeating local member Anja Muller by 3 points.

In Division 3, the Mollymook members cleaned up all the major prizes with Lesley Betsis winning with 67 points by 3 shots from Aya Shibata.

In the Foursomes event, Kate Royal & Rosalind Carr from Royal Canberra won the Foursomes Championship from Narelle Axford and Yvette Rochford from Kareela GC.  Local members Maureen Derham and Patti Kerr won Division 2 from Debby Jackson and Angela Andrews.

Sienna is pictured here with Women's Captain, Sue Rayner (left) and MGC Life Member, Joan McMullan (right).

Women's Club Championship

Karen Bashford (pictured), successfully defended her title as the Women's Club Champion.  This was Karen's 4th Club Championship win in the last 11 years.

It was tough going in between wet weather events over the two weeks but Karen shot a great final round score of 79 in difficult conditions to cruise to the overall victory by 25 shots.  Deb Charles just pipped Veronica Johnston by 2 shots to finish Runner Up.

In Division 2, Kristine Harrod picked up 5 shots on Denise Bower in the final round to win by 3 shots overall from Denise.

In Division 3, Jane Rutkin played steady over all 4 rounds to win by 14 shots from Gwenda Turnbull.

Congratulations to all the women who competed in this year's Club Championships.  It was tough going!

Course Maintenance Update...

We have some more course works projects "booked in" (again) so hopefully the rain will hold off this time.

From Monday 16th June Holes 6A & 6B will be in play and the 17th Hole will be out of play for a week.  During this time, we will be renovating the bridge on the 17th Hole while also installing a new cart path on the 17th from the bridge to the back of the 2nd Tee.  These projects should take a week (weather permitting) so it is a good opportunity to play the new holes.

Next week the small footbridge on the 7th will be renovated and we are hoping to install the new safety fence along the 16th Tees if we can get truck access to that area.

A reminder that you have access to a link on our website to leave any feedback or comments about course maintenance issues.  Please visit our club website and hover over the "GOLF" option, then click "COURSE MAINTENANCE CONTACT" from the list.  In this section you can fill in the details with a message or concerns about any area in particular.  You can also add photos in this section.   The current Course Maintenance Projects being addressed are also available in this section.

It has been difficult over the last 6 weeks to get normal mowing done let alone additional works so we have revised and updated the maintenance projects with new timelines, please see the link on our website or click the link below...
